Exploring off-road is at the top of many adventure riders’ lists. Many of us purchase adventure bikes with the knowledge that they can go almost anywhere. Unfortunately, our skills often don’t match the potential of ADV bikes. Many lack training, community or confidence in their ability to take their bikes into the wild unknown.
Last September, I was welcomed to the BMW ADV-X, an event I had been looking forward to all year. The event offered instruction, guided rides, accommodation, meals, and even transport of your bike across Canada. Over 50 riders congregated at Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops, B.C., to explore some of the best gravel and trails in the interior of the province.

There were riders from across Canada, with the furthest travelling from Newfoundland, many from Ontario, a few from the States and a few local to the B.C. area. BMW removed the guesswork for its guests travelling from out of province (or country), only requiring them to get their bikes to the designated BMW dealerships where transport to B.C. was provided for a small additional cost. Once the guests arrived at Sun Peaks Resort, meals, accommodation, riding routes and gas was provided.

AN EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER
I was elated to arrive and see a sea of Beemers and riders from all over socializing with instructors, and BMW staff helping guests to get set up for the week of riding. There was an instant connection with all riders, no matter where they came from, or how skilled they were as riders. It felt like home.

We filtered in for our first dinner and safety meeting and got our schedules of what we could expect for the week. We also heard from our guides: Ryan Austin with Enduro Park Canada and — Mojo columnist— Clinton Smout from SMART Riding Adventures were the two main instructors, along with many other certified instructors, which ensured small group numbers to meet the specific riding needs of all participants.
I have to say: I was unsure how much I would enjoy the event, thinking I had already explored the area in-depth over the past few years. Boy, was I wrong! We meandered in every direction from the resort throughout the week, and there was only one road I recognized. The creativity of the route-planning offered immense diversity in terrain and scenery — and all this while being led by knowledgeable guides who provided insight on riding techniques and easy adjustments to your bike to assist riders in performing better.

SAFETY TOP OF MIND
Each day a new route was presented that offered more difficulty than the day before, designed to progressively build the skills of the riders. On top of that, safety came first and foremost. When we encountered a difficult…
